TERM 2 ROCKETS

Last term room 4 inquired into the world of rockets. We made balloon rockets, puff rockets and bottle rockets.

We examined the role that fins have on a rocket by creating two sets of fins and tested them on a puff rocket to see their effectiveness.

We explored Newton's third law of motion 'For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction' by creating balloon rockets, which we launched in our classroom.
  

Finally we used our new understanding about rockets to build and launch a bottle rocket. First of all our teacher created a control rocket. We then selected one feature on the rocket to modify. We predicted how our modified rockets would fly compared with the control rocket and tried to explain our predictions. After launching them we observed the differences between our rockets and the control rocket and tried to explain the differences. Check out the video clip below!

We had lots of fun launching our rockets. A special thanks to Gus's dad, Brian, who helped build and launched our rockets and to our caretaker Ian who built the launch pads that we used.

Week 1 Video Clips

This week during literacy room 4 have been creating short video clips based on the short film 'Words' by the Mercadantes. 

WORDS

To begin each group brainstormed various ways verbs and nouns could be represented based on the different words were used in the video clip 'Words'. Each group thought of two words they could film.

After that each group created a basic storyboard for the short film they would create. As well as exploring the process for creating a storyboard room 4 looked at basic camera shots they could use to film their clip.

Room 4 Video Clip 1

Dance & te reo Maori

Throughout this term on Wednesday room 4 will have dance and te reo Maori sessions with Mrs Pearson. 

This week room 4 learnt the numbers from 1-10 in te reo Maori. They used the animals to count different groups of animals.

During dance room 4 played musical statues and created their own dance routine. They also had the opportunity to create different moves to match different styles of music and use their bodies to create different shapes and letters.

PLANT REPORTS

Lately room 4 have been pretending to be botanists and have written reports about a new species of plant that they have discovered. 

Included in the reports is information about what the plants look like, things they require to survive, any particular uses they have and what their habitats are like.

Room 4 published their reports using a basic diorama template. Come into room 4 and check them out. 

Balloon Rockets

Last Monday room 4 made some balloon rockets. First you need to get some sticky tape and a straw. Attach the straw to the balloon and get some string and put the string through the straw. Blow up the balloon and let GO!

Tahuna the Tuatara Award

There is a person in room 4 who is friendly and quiet.

They are respectful and caring and look after everyone like a kindly giant.

They personify our school values and would never cause a riot

And they excel in their learning and could one day be a pilot.
